ABOUT

We love barbecue and the transformative power smoke and time has on food. Barbecue is good-time food that evokes powerful memories for most of us. We see CrossTies as carrying on this tradition while imparting our own unique spin on the food and providing great service…just as we’ve done at Venable and B-Side. We’ve also opened The Station right next to CrossTies, offering live music and great drinks for pre or post dinner enjoyment.

We’re happy to tell you all about our food (and do in a minute) but the space and its history deserve equal billing. CrossTies and The Station sit on what was once the Carrboro Railways Station, home to the Greensboro-Durham Southern Railway Line. The railroad brought supplies to the mill and transported countless people and products to Carrboro and Chapel Hill for over a century. Once the railroad line reduced service and the station closed, many businesses have operated in this space and it also sat abandoned for years. The fine folks at Southern Rail started a renovation in the ’00s, creating a central dining space and using the vintage train cars for dining, bar and kitchen. We’ve added to this with a new bar in the central room, expanding the kitchen and adding a smokehouse. We’ve also renovated the two cars for comfortable dining and have named the right car after noted Carrboro blues legend Elizabeth Cotten and the left car “The Whopper”, which was the name of the engine that worked the line back in its heyday. We hope you’ll dine with us in both and you can rent them out for a private party too…

So, the food. We developed the menu with local BBQ pitmaster Ruddy Edwards. Ruddy has barbecue in his blood and has manned pits for years. The smokehouse drives the menu, which includes traditional plates, sandwiches and sides as well as inventive salads, appetizers or desserts. We aim to be as vegetarian friendly as a barbecue joint can be with smoked tofu, a smoked portobello sandwich and plenty of salads, veggies and greens on the menu. We’re also proud of our bar, with craft beers on tap, a carefully curated wine list and full bar with cocktails meant to pair well with the food. Many like to dine with us at the bar!
